I've always wanted to dive with Great White Sharks ever since I visited Australia back in the early 90's. I had the good fortune to dive in the "Coral Sea" off the coast of Australia. One of the dive days featured a shark feeding which was awesome... but... they were mainly black tip and white tip reef sharks involved in the frenzy. I wanted to see the "legendary" Great Whites!
The cost was $5,000.00 US (and more) with no guarantee of seeing a Great White, so, I did not pursue the opportunity and explored The Great Barrier Reef instead.
It would take me nearly 20 years to discover "Isla Guadalupe" which is off the coast of Ensenada, Mexico. The price tag was still hefty at $3,500.00 for a 4-day excursion but the odds of seeing Great White Sharks was a solid 95%.
Every time I entered the cage there were numerous Great White Sharks and they were very calm, even gentle. I was told that the sharks would sometimes disappear into the depths because of the aggressive nature of the sea lions! I remember seeing the first Great White from the deck of the boat and it was BIG!! The shark looked like a "Volkswagen Beetle" circling the vessel.
Trips to see Great White Sharks have become less expensive as more tour operators venture to "Isla Guadalupe".
